Washington wants foreign-built robots out of American factories. The timing is awkward. Domestic manufacturers still can't produce enough of the machines to fill the space those imports would vacate, and that gap is exactly where the current fight over industrial policy lives.
The logic behind the push is straightforward enough. Reduce dependence on machines built overseas, and you shore up both supply chains and national security. What the argument tends to skip past is the production reality on the ground. American robot makers aren't ready to absorb the demand. Ask them to replace the imports tomorrow and you get shortages, not self-sufficiency.
That's the friction. Policy is moving in one direction while capacity moves at its own pace, and the two haven't met yet. Factories that rely on foreign robots today would need somewhere else to turn, and right now that somewhere doesn't fully exist.
Over in prestige television, the risk-taking is a different kind, but no less deliberate. The showrunner behind Lanterns has been talking about how much the show staked on its first episode. The twist that closes episode one is still being picked apart by viewers, and it turns out that was the point. The bet was that opening on a swing that big would set the tone for everything after it.
Then there's the money. If you want to see where AI investment is actually flowing, look at the UAE. The figures coming out of the region describe a place that has decided to compete, and there's nothing tentative about it. This is a bid to sit at the table with the biggest players in the field, backed by capital that makes the ambition credible.
Three stories, one thread running through them: the distance between intention and capacity. Washington intends to onshore robotics faster than its factories can build. A television series intended to unsettle its audience from the first hour. A Gulf state intends to buy its way into the front rank of AI. Two of those bets are already paying out. The third is still waiting on the machines.

The FCC has expanded its Covered List, the national security roster that previously pushed Huawei and ZTE out of American markets, to include advanced robotic devices. The motors, sensors, and actuators that robots depend on are often too expensive, too slow to procure, or flatly unavailable from U.S. suppliers. The situation has become acute enough that employees at some companies have reportedly flown components in from China in their luggage just to keep prototypes moving. Michael Perry of Persona AI captured the industry's frustration plainly: "You need to provide the carrot as well as the stick." Not everyone is opposed, Oregon-based Agility Robotics and San Francisco's Nori Robotics both welcome the pressure, seeing it as long-term protection against cheaper Chinese competition.
China's grip on robotics manufacturing is the product of decades of state investment, a large engineering workforce, and a mature supply chain built alongside its electric-vehicle industry, and it will not loosen quickly. Whether U.S. policy can accelerate domestic alternatives fast enough to meet its own deadlines is a question the industry will be answering in real time over the next several years.

Showrunner Chris Mundy, who developed the series alongside Damon Lindelof and comics writer Tom King, describes the decision as "kind of big and scary," but says it was essential to making the central mystery feel as emotionally meaningful as possible, both for John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), the trainee Green Lantern who discovers his mentor's body, and for Hal himself. Because the show moves across multiple time periods, Chandler will continue to appear throughout the season even though viewers now know his fate. The missing ring threads through that tension, raising questions about what Hal lost, why, and how his story ends up where it does.
With virtually no creative constraints imposed by the broader James Gunn DC Universe and a cast anchored by Chandler's disarming charm, Lanterns is clearly betting that its prestige-drama ambitions can draw in audiences well beyond the superhero faithful, and its opening episode suggests it has the nerve to back that bet up.
UAE AI market projected to grow from $5.5 billion to $213 billion by 2035
The UAE's artificial intelligence market is on a trajectory that has few parallels anywhere in the world. Valued at roughly $5.5 billion in 2025, the market is projected to reach $213 billion by 2035, compounding at an annual rate of 44.15 percent over the decade. That growth is not incidental. The UAE appointed the world's first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in 2017, years before generative AI became a global phenomenon, and the policy infrastructure built since then is now translating into measurable commercial momentum. Today, 70.1 percent of the UAE's working-age population uses AI, a rate more than twice that of the United States, and the government has committed to running half of all public services on autonomous agentic AI systems within two years.
The capital flowing into that ambition is staggering. Abu Dhabi's sovereign investment vehicle MGX closed a $49 billion AI fund above its target, with stakes in OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, while a partnership involving G42, OpenAI, Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, and SoftBank is developing Stargate UAE, a planned five-gigawatt data center campus in Abu Dhabi that would be the largest AI compute installation outside the United States. Microsoft has invested $1.5 billion directly into G42, and a US-UAE framework agreement allows the country to import up to 500,000 of Nvidia's most advanced chips annually. AI is expected to contribute roughly $96 billion to UAE GDP by 2030, the largest share among all Gulf Cooperation Council nations. Within the domestic market itself, generative AI is the fastest-growing technology segment at a 50.1 percent compound annual rate, and Abu Dhabi is on course to overtake Dubai as the country's largest AI market by 2035, driven by concentrated sovereign investment and infrastructure build-out.
With the government's agentic AI mandate requiring all federal employees to receive AI training, AI-related job postings having tripled since 2021, and Abu Dhabi's count of AI-focused companies growing 67 percent in a single year to around 700 firms, the structural conditions for sustained expansion are firmly in place across both the public and private sectors.
