Apple will have a very limited supply of foldable iPhone Duo in stores

Apple's folding iPhone Duo goes on sale Oct 23, but if you didn't get an online order in early, getting one on launch day will be a gamble. Apple said Oct 21 that its stores will have only a "limited" number of units for walk-in customers, after initial online orders sold out within minutes and pushed delivery for some buyers to January. Where you live matters. Walk-in purchases and online order pickup will be available in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and much of Britain and Europe, though Apple says availability will vary by country.

In mainland China, Japan, South Korea, France, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, stores will only hand over units to customers who already ordered online. Macau is the reverse: walk-in sales only, with limited inventory. The tight supply may not ease quickly. The iPhone Duo uses a tight-fitting hinge that analysts believe could take Apple time to manufacture in high volumes, even as they expect it to rise fast in a niche where Samsung and Huawei have sold premium folding phones for years. Apple says it is working to get the phone to customers as quickly as possible.

Google Maps on CarPlay now includes Gemini chatbot for in-drive questions

Google Maps on CarPlay now has Gemini built in. If you prefer Google's navigation to Apple's on your iPhone, look for a new Gemini icon toward the bottom right of the Maps screen while you're driving. Tap it, and you can start asking the chatbot questions, from finding stops along your route to reporting traffic disruptions or pulling up information about places. Google says Gemini in navigation is especially suited to multi-part questions, such as asking which park is famous for gorgeous views overlooking the city. The rollout starts today for CarPlay users in the US and around the world, though it may take a few days to reach your device, so don't worry if the icon hasn't shown up yet.

If you'd rather stick with Apple's side of the dashboard, our guide to the best Siri commands covers what Apple's assistant can already handle. The update follows Google's announcement yesterday that Gemini Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Android Auto users. When enabled, it lets the chatbot draw on your other Google apps to personalize answers, which Google says improves Gemini's reasoning and lets it give more specific details in response to your prompts. Whether that same personalization comes to CarPlay is something to watch, especially as Google's Android Show 2026 announcements push Gemini deeper into everyday Google services.

New French prize invites AI co-written novels, promises winner publication

A new French literary prize is openly inviting novels written with AI. The Prix Pascal de Littérature IA opened for entries on Tuesday, and the winning manuscript is promised publication. Writers anywhere in the world can enter, but submissions must be in French, unpublished, and between 10,000 and 50,000 words. Entrants also have to disclose which AI model and prompt produced the text, and all major models are allowed, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and LLaMA.

There is a catch for anyone hoping to enter with a pure page-turner. The terms ask for fiction, but the prize also says submissions should help solve an ethical, social, or ecological problem threatening humanity. “The Pascal Prize raises the question aloud: what is a work of art when the author and the machine collaborate?” proclaims the website. The award money? Apparently, none. All you are promised is publication of the work and media exposure. Thankfully, you don’t need to be a professional writer to submit a pitch, though the book will be judged by humans.
