Apple has drawn a sharper line than ever through its Mac desktop lineup, announcing the M6 and M5 Ultra chips alongside new versions of the Mac mini and Mac Studio. The M6 is Apple's first chip built on a 2nm process, and it brings a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine to the compact Mac mini. Apple says single-threaded performance is the fastest it has ever delivered, multithreaded performance jumps up to 1.2 times over M5, and peak GPU compute for AI workloads runs 30 percent higher than its predecessor. System frameworks can spread AI tasks automatically across both Neural Engine cores, which Apple expects to accelerate local image generation, coding assistance, and large language model interactions.

The M5 Ultra occupies an entirely different tier. Apple built it by fusing two dual-die M5 Max chips through its UltraFusion interconnect into a single quad-die processor, yielding up to 36 CPU cores, up to 80 GPU cores, a 32-core Neural Engine, and 512GB of unified memory with up to 1.2TB/s of bandwidth. That memory capacity is the headline for AI work specifically, as it allows large models with hundreds of billions of parameters to run entirely on device. The chip also brings hardware acceleration for AV1 alongside ProRes and ProRes RAW, and it introduces Apple's latest graphics architecture with Dynamic Caching, mesh shading, and ray tracing to the Mac Studio. Both machines open for preorder today, and ship September 22.

The United States may be winning battles in the AI chip war while quietly losing the more consequential fight for human talent. The Trump administration has proposed steep new fees on H-1B visas and is weighing a $100,000 charge on Optional Practical Training, the program that allowed roughly 419,000 international graduates to work in the U.S. after finishing their degrees in 2024. At the same time, the window for students to remain in the country after completing a degree has been cut from 60 days to 30, meaning students are now spending the final stretch of their doctoral programs scrambling for employment rather than thinking about how to turn their research into companies.

The consequences are already visible. Yang Zhilin earned his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon, interned at Google and Meta, and received a job offer from Apple, yet he returned to China to found Moonshot AI, whose Kimi K3 model is now drawing comparisons to work from OpenAI and Anthropic. Omar Yaghi, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist who came to the U.S. as a refugee teenager, recently left his faculty post at UC Berkeley for Tsinghua University in Beijing. These are not isolated cases. Immigrants have received 40 percent of the Nobel Prizes won by Americans in chemistry, medicine, and physics since 2000, and more than two-thirds of the small population capable of founding a frontier AI company are foreign-born. Canada, Australia, France, and China have all moved aggressively to recruit researchers unsettled by the current U.S. climate, with Canada's H-1B outreach program oversubscribed within a single day.

Uber has introduced a live video streaming feature for teen accounts, letting parents and guardians watch a ride in real time through the driver's phone selfie camera. The feature is designed for quick check-ins rather than continuous surveillance, giving families a direct window into what is happening inside the vehicle during a trip. Only a teen's linked parent or guardian can access the stream, and Uber says the video is encrypted so that neither the driver, the guardian, nor the teen retains a recording once the trip ends. The feature is currently being piloted in nine markets, including Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Portland, and Cleveland, among others, with a nationwide rollout across the United States expected in the coming weeks.

Uber teen accounts, which launched in 2023, already allowed parents to track trips in the app and receive real-time status updates, and the live stream builds on that foundation by adding a more immediate layer of visibility. The move is part of a broader industry push to address rider safety concerns, with competitors like Lyft offering audio recordings and driver-blocking options of their own. As Uber expands the streaming feature nationally, it stands to become a meaningful differentiator for families weighing whether ride-hailing is an appropriate option for their teenagers.
